An Ode to Atoms

O atom, you who I have to remember

You who I want to forget

If you I did not remember

You, I wouldn’t have met

O atom, if I haven’t met you

War wouldn’t have been waged

Bombs and tanks wouldn’t have been invented

If you weren’t remembered out of rage

O atom, if I haven’t met you

Medicine wouldn’t be made

Forced to watch as loved ones begged for mercy

If only in our memories you didn’t fade

O atom, if I haven’t met you

How easy my life would have been, yes!

I wouldn’t have to memorize you

But oh. Society wouldn’t progress
